Living with a loved one who is suffering from addiction can be a hurtful, exhausting experience. Friends and family members can feel like they are walking a fine line between helping their loved one while trying not to enable the addiction.

It’s critical that family members and friends understand that they are not responsible for this addiction. They didn’t cause it, they can’t control it, and they can’t cure it for their loved one. What they can do, however, is support their addicted loved one through his/her recovery process. The first step in helping is to understand what exactly is going on.

Addiction is a family disease.
